Is it quarterback or bust in the first round?Oh how beautiful it all is. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, the Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche are winning and the NFL draft is on Thursday. Everything on that list is a guarantee to make us happier except of course the last one. Though the lead up to the draft is always exciting and hopeful there is always a small chance that it turns out to bedisastrous for our beloved football team. Anyone remember Alphonso Smith? The Denver Broncos have the tenth pick in the draft after drafting Bradley Chubb in the top-ten last year and when you have the shame of picking back-to-back top-ten players, you at least better make it worth it by not choking on the selections. I recently watched the movies ‘Draft Day’ with Kevin Costner and though it is definitely a flawed film, it does show what I believe to be the real chaotic atmosphere that we experience each April. GMs can and do panic and make terrible decisions on the spur of the moment and here’s to hoping that John Elway isn’t one of them in 2019.There are so many stud players available in this draft that it seems unlikely and almost impossible to totally miss no matter who they pick at the decade mark in the draft. QBs have been picked in the top-ten many times and there have been far more misses than hits which has been a problem that teams have had for decades. If you need a QB - like about half the league does - then you will give up whatever it takes if you think one of the guys could be “it”. The Broncos infamously traded up for Paxton Lynch who was a bomb of all bombs but it’s not like that’s the first time a team has missed on picked a thrower in the first round.Of course the latest news coming from multiple sources is that John Elway is not interested in any QB in the first round and that rumor has it that the Redskins are “in love” with Dwayne Haskins. In our podcast we (Kevin and the Skipper Dude) discuss who we think will be available at the number ten spot in this year’s draft and we both agree that the most likely scenario is that the guys they love will be off the board and so they’ll trade back for more picks. The three guys that should be picked if there at ten would be (in Kevin’s opinion): Devin White https://www.broncoslockerroom.com/authentic-phillip-lindsay-jersey , Ed Oliver and Dwayne Haskins (though again, according to the latest rumors, probably not Haskins.)If those three players aren’t there, which is very possible, then they trade back to the mid-teens and hope to pick up someone like T.J Hockenson or or Devin Bush. Though most people seem very okay with drafting an ILB or DT, the idea that Fangio will undoubtedly stackup on defense may be a misconception. Defensive coaches often stock up on offensive talent because they believe that they can coach up lesser talent on D. If Fangio has any say in this draft - which no doubt he will - then it would not be shocking if he picks someone like Hockenson. We will see.Is it Thursday yet? There are an exciting few days remaining in which we can read another 100 mocks and 60 of them will say (incorrectly) that Drew Lock is the guy. As I (Kevin) say in the podcast; if the Broncos select Drew Lock at ten I will sit in a freezing cold river for three minutes and eat crow and gladly post the video to Twitter @Kevvygillikin.Let’s go!IEWT! Here are some highlight reels from his collegiate career. back from the 10th overall spot to the 20th overall spot with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Denver Broncos wasted no time in drafting Iowa tight end Noah Fant. He has been a very productive tight end and the second one of the board behind former teammate T.J. Hockenson went in the Top 10.After the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft was completed, John Elway said, “Speed tight ends can be very effective in this offense.”He went on to talk about George Kittle and how well he played under new Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello with the San Francisco 49ers. This could end up being an elite offensive pick for Denver.
