Who’s up and who’s down? Taking stock of the 49ers after Day 5 of training camp." San Francisco 49ers News49ers Training Camp 2019Stock report from Day 5 of 49ers training campNew Trent Taylor Jersey White ,26commentsWho’s up and who’s down? Taking stock of the 49ers after Day 5 of training camp.PDTThe San Francisco 49ers were given Wednesday off after four consecutive practices. The team returned on Thursday for Day 5 and were greeted by their first red-zone practice, with two out of the three final sessions taking place inside the 20-yard line. Kyle Shanahan’s offense took control early, getting the better of a defense that’s been the star through four practices. Here’s our stock report after Day 5 of the 49ers training camp:Stock up: Red zone offenseThe 49ers capped off Thursday’s practice with an 11-on-11 red zone period. It was a session dominated by the offense. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed five passes in six attempts including four touchdowns. Dante Pettis (twice), George Kittle and Matt Breida all reeled in touchdowns from the 49ers’ franchise quarterback. It was a solid step in the right direction for an offense that's struggled to establish any momentum against an impressive 49ers defense. Stock down: QB CJ BeathardThe battle for backup duties behind Garoppolo, while hopefully inconsequential, is one of the more heated battles of 49ers training camp. Former undrafted free agent versus third-round pick, Nick Mullens and CJ Beathard has been given sparse reps through the first five practices. Mullens has played well and seems to have established a lead in the competition. It’s an advantage that may have increased after Beathard’s performance on Thursday. The third-year quarterback only completed 2 of 7 passes during team drills and was one of five during the red-zone period.Stock up: WR Dante PettisPettis stock fell a bit on a previous report. His drops have become a steady issue through the first four days, a problem that wasn’t present on Day 5. Pettis was the 49ers’ go-to target during the red zone period of practice. He caught two touchdowns from Jimmy Garoppolo during the final 11-on-11 portion of practice, and one from Beathard. His highlight came during 1-on-1s while matched up against cornerback Richard Sherman. Pettis beat the veteran to the corner on a fade from Garoppolo Arik Armstead Jersey White , leaping up to haul in the pass before turning and getting his feet in for the score.Stock down: CB Ahkello WitherspoonWitherspoon’s been having an impressive camp so far, but he looked off on Day 5. He was victimized during the 1-on-1 portion of red zone drills, dropping reps to both Marquise Goodwin and Deebo Samuel. Witherspoon looked frustrated, which is odd considering his high energy throughout the first four practices. His performance on Day 6 will be one to watch.Stock up: DL Sheldon DayDay’s stock went up in our last report. He’s earned another mention. Day was the most disruptive defensive lineman during the team portion of red zone drills on Thursday. He racked up two sacks, and an impressive run stop while receiving additional work in DeForest Buckner’s absence. Day was a waiver claim two seasons ago; now he’s a significant factor among the 49ers’ talent-laden defensive line.Stock up: WR Richie JamesJames earned a stock increase much earlier than Day 5. It’s on me for not including him sooner. James has been one of the 49ers’ most impressive receivers through five practices. He’s earned the respect of all three quarterbacks. James’ highlight play of camp so far came on Day 3 when he reeled in a deep pass from Garoppolo over the coverage of safety Adrian Colbert, sprinting into the endzone for the would-be score. Given his ability on special teams, James’ chances at a roster spot seem very good. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have raced out to a 6-0 record by beating just one team without a losing record. The task gets extremely more difficult starting this week as the next seven games for the 49ers are all against teams that are .500 or better. So the 49ers know they must play even better if they want to maintain this level of success, starting with this week’s home game against Carolina (4-2).“You have to regardless of who you’re playing Roger Craig Jersey ,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “I mean, you get better or you get worse, you don’t stay the same. As this year goes, it gets harder and harder and we’ve got to make sure as it gets harder we have to get better if we want to meet our own expectations.”It was hard to judge how well the Niners played on Sunday, when they beat an overmatched Washington team 9-0 on a rainy day that made it difficult for quarterbacks to throw the ball and for anyone to keep their footing. But they managed to do enough to come out with another win even if it wasn’t a masterpiece.“The scheme and game plan and stuff for both sides kind of just completely goes out and you just, you watch the effort, and just the guys trying to grind it out through some pretty bad, it was as bad of conditions as I’ve been in,” Shanahan said. “I’ve been in some colder games Nick Mullens Jersey White , some snow games and stuff, but none that have just really rained that much from beginning to end, especially on that type of field. You just evaluate the effort, how hard guys played.”WHAT’S WORKINGThe 49ers’ pass defense was once again the dominant unit. San Francisco held Case Keenum to just nine completions and 77 total yards through the air and had three sacks for 27 yards. This marked the second straight game that the Niners have allowed 50 or fewer net yards passing, the first team since Minnesota in 1988 to do that in back-to-back games.WHAT NEEDS HELPWhile the rain helped the pass defense, it made it hard for Jimmy Garoppolo to throw the ball consistently. Garoppolo finished just 12 for 21 for 151 yards with an interception on a fourth-down pass in the third quarter. Garoppolo has now gone back-to-back games without a TD pass had has only seven touchdown passes on the season compared with six interceptions.STOCK UPWR Kendrick Bourne. The Niners have the fewest receptions from their wide receivers in the NFL this season with just 49. So it was a positive sign that Bourne made a solid contribution. He had three catches for 69 yards after entering the game with just six catches for 70 yards the first five games.STOCK DOWNK Robbie Gould. Gould missed a 45-yard field goal try in the second quarter, his career-high seventh miss already this season. Gould is the second kicker to miss at least seven field goals in the past 25 years, joining Sebastian Janikowski in 2000. Making matters worse is the fact that Gould was given a four-year, $19 million contract with $10.5 million guaranteed this summer after skipping the offseason program in a contract dispute.INJUREDLeft tackle Joe Staley is expected to practice this week for the first time since breaking a bone in his leg in Week 2. There’s an outside chance he can play this week http://www.49erslockerroom.com/authentic-patrick-willis-jersey , but could be an option Oct. 31 against Arizona. Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon had a minor setback in his recovery from a foot injury last week and might need to miss another game.KEY NUMBER64. The Niners have allowed just 64 points, the second fewest after six games in franchise history to the 63 given up in 1976. San Francisco has also held three straight opponents to seven or fewer points and less than 200 yards. They are the sixth team to do that since 1990, joining Pittsburgh (1990), New Orleans (1991), Baltimore (2000), Tennessee (2000) and New England (2005).NEXT STEPSThe 49ers return home to take on the rested Carolina Panthers, who won their past four games before an off week.
