The artist was previously a part of in the PlayStation's Uncharted series and, for some reason, that inspired fans to form connections. However, Kozlowsky and Retro Studios were involved in the development of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and when the game's release date was announced, many Zelda players slammed it as they were expecting something else. In a recent interview on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Kozlowsky explained how the rumor led to frustration for the development team.
"Sometimes it's frustrating since it causes false expectations. And I think that happened when we first announced Tropical Freeze. You know, everyone was thinking 'they're working on some kind of Zelda game It's something like a Zelda game' however, they were like 'nope!. We announced Tropical Freeze and it looks incredible and stunning and people then go "oh, this is another Donkey Kong.'
And then you know people are s**ting on it on Neogaf or something and you're like 'oh you know, because everybody thought we were playing some sort of Zelda game. Then it's like this isn't what we do.' So it's both in that we sometimes laugh at it, sometimes it gets irritating when it carries on for a little way too long," said Kozlowsky.
Kozlowsky's statements are an interesting glimpse into how rumors get spread, and how that can negative impact the reception of a game. Although Tropical Freeze might not have been the game most fans were hoping to see released and released, it did get a lot of critical appreciation upon its release. It has to be frustrating to work hard on something only to have the internet to react with disappointment , based on faulty information. It's impossible to control the reaction of fans to announcing of a game however, hopefully this experience gave some fans a better understanding of keeping their expectations in check!
