The First Complicated Watch in the Cubitus Collection
Patek Philippe continues to expand the Cubitus collection with the introduction of its first complicated watch. The new Cubitus Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5840P-001 blends rigorous watchmaking craftsmanship with bold modern aesthetics. Its skeletonized design subtly showcases the complex structure and exquisite finishing of the mechanical movement. The case and movement are seamlessly integrated, aiming to highlight technical precision and the beauty of every detail.
Sporty Elegance and Mechanical Masterpiece
The sporty yet elegant Cubitus collection will be launched in October 2024, initially featuring three large-sized watches. Two of these watches are crafted from stainless steel and bimetallic (rose gold and stainless steel) respectively, displaying hours, minutes, seconds, and date; the platinum model is equipped with a movement featuring a large date, day of the week, instantaneous moon phase, and small seconds. In 2025, Patek Philippe will launch two new mid-sized watches, one in rose gold and the other in white gold. At Watches and Wonders 2026, Patek Philippe will further enrich the collection with its first complicated timepiece: Ref. 5840P-001, a perpetual calendar watch featuring a skeletonized dial and a square movement, boasting a bold and modern design.

With the skeletonized Cubitus perpetual calendar watch, Patek Philippe once again demonstrates its exceptional watchmaking skills, crafting the timepiece into a harmonious and unique whole, aiming to highlight the exquisite craftsmanship and the delicate beauty of every detail. To this end, Patek Philippe developed the new 28-28 Q SQU movement, whose square shape blends perfectly with the lines of the Cubitus case. The structural design of this skeletonized movement is intended to echo the unique style of the collection. The movement components are skeletonized, their overall design echoing the iconic guilloché pattern on the Cubitus dial. This technique has been pushed to its limits, while retaining sufficient material in key areas to ensure the watch's enduring smooth operation—a hallmark of Patek Philippe timepieces.
For the first time, Patek Philippe employs a monochromatic movement, accented only with subtle blue details achieved through heat treatment of the screws and hand-engraving and lacquering of the Calatrava cross on the miniature rotor. The mainplate, bridges, discs, balance wheel, and gold miniature rotor all utilize the same rhodium plating, lending the overall design a modern and striking aesthetic. Attention to detail is also evident in the transparent sapphire crystal, although the escapement fork retains a red hue for fine-tuning.
The intricate structure of the fully skeletonized movement is further accentuated by the monochromatic treatment, while the refined finishing enhances its visual impact and harmony. The new 28-28 Q SQU movement comprises 313 parts, displaying hours, minutes, seconds, date, day of the week, month, moon phase, 24-hour format, and leap year indication. This new movement is an upgrade to the 240 Q movement, also optimized for the square case, particularly in the mechanism that transmits the pulse from the case-side adjustment pushers to the movement. At the heart of the calendar mechanism is the 48-tooth cam, a signature feature of the 240 series perpetual calendar movement.
It acts as the movement's calendar memory device, completing a full rotation every four years. Its circumference is divided into 48 sections, corresponding to the 48 months in the four-year leap cycle. Different grooves on the outer edge of the cam allow the mechanism to distinguish months with different numbers of days. Over four years, as a finger gradually "detects" the contour of the cam's outer edge with the large rocker arm, the calendar mechanism determines whether the month has 28, 29, 30, or 31 days based on the depth of the finger's touch. This ensures the calendar always displays the correct date without manual intervention. According to the globally accepted Gregorian calendar rules, years at the end of the century (2100, 2200, 2300) require adjustment because these years are not leap years. However, if a year is a multiple of 400, a leap day is automatically added, and the perpetual calendar does not require adjustment.
